Yesterday was the birth date of Johnny Mercer, one of Americas greatest songwriters. Mercer wrote songs with everyone from Hoagy Carmichael to Henry Mancini. He broke into the business as a singer with Paul Whitemans band, later, with Benny Goodmans band. In 1942 he was a co-founder of Capitol Records, becoming Capitols first President and chief talent scout. He signed up such performers as Stan Kenton, Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Margaret Whiting, and by 1946 Capitol was responsible for one sixth of all records sold in the U.S. He wrote for film, Broadway, Sinatra, Judy Garland, Nat Cole, was in many films, sang on radio and television.
