Yoruba, let’s stop pretending internet activism is the real thing. There is a lack of modern activism in Yorubaland. Open any newspaper, current affairs magazine or political website and it soon becomes clear that things are not right in Yorubaland. Pictures and idle speculation concerning new political party aside, it’s a quagmire of unhappiness directed towards the government, the opposition, the public sector, the private sector, Nigeria, foreign affairs, ourselves, each other, and the ethnic nationalities groups. There are complex and important issues surrounding the environment, the future of Nigeria, youth unemployment, the economy, how we deal with ethnic nationalities question and more, yet apart from lightly grumbling when asked our opinion, we seem to be in tacit acceptance of all that’s imposed upon us. It didn’t always used to be like this. In the 19th century, our – ancestors – got things done. From the success of the abolition of slavery, to the movement for independence, through to the Operation wetie strikes of the 1960s, it’s fair to say they made sure their voices were heard when they weren’t happy with how things were going.
