You know what it’s like to have a compulsion - you do something - TopicsExpress

You know what it’s like to have a compulsion - you do something because you have to do it - even though you know the outcome is depressingly familiar. Continually going to that door was a compulsion of mine - I didn’t want to do it, but I somehow had to. There was no point in going to the door, because I did not have a key. Without a key you couldn’t get through the door; and I was not given a key. My friend Les Marno didn’t have a key either and it angered him quite a lot. He said a time would come - so he had been told - when everyone who wants a key will be given one; but in the meantime, he found the situation intolerable. One day I went to door and, as usual it was locked, and then Les appeared. ‘I cannot get in’ -I said. Les replied: ‘I know how to get in. I know how both of us can get in!’ ‘Have they given you a key?’ I asked. Les looked at me sharply: ‘No. But I know how to get in and I will show you how to do it - so that anytime you want to get in, you will be able to.’ I watched as Les put his hand under his coat and took out a knife. He pressed a button on the handle and a shiny sliver of steel snapped outwards. It was a flick-knife! I watched him as he pressed the blade between the door and its’ wooden frame. With his free hand he gripped the door handle. ‘Watch this’ he said. ‘I am pushing the door away from me as I press the blade onto the side of the lock; I then squeeze the lock back all that I can - it will be less than a millimetre. Then I press the blade and hold the bolt at that point and at the same time push the door back to get another grip on the bolt; and then slide it back by another millimetre. You have to concentrate, because if you let the knife slip, the bolt will spring back and you have to start again from the beginning.’ I stood beside him and watched him do the push/pull sequence at least twenty times - and then, with a yelp of victory - the door was opened and he stood laughing. ‘It’s easy - even you can do it!’ He said. ‘Okay,’ ‘ I mean it’s easy - you won’t be locked out again Nothing will stop you getting through the door!’
