Young US soldiers who went to Sunday school and learned about love, mercy, and good will, but who, a few years later, also got drilled to kill, and who, without love, mercy, and good will, mowed down women, children, and old men whose only crime it was that they had lived in their own village like their ancestors had for hundreds of years, and were in the way of the young US soldiers. The same scenario takes place around the world today, with young Israeli soldiers intimidating Palestinian women, roughing up children, and killing quite a few of those who resist. More drastically, we can see what happens to young Muslims who learned about love, mercy, and good will, but who also were taught to hate and to kill. Thousands of beheaded corpses later, nothing seems to have changed. The massacre of My Lai exists around the globe, exists deep inside the head, the hearts of those who believe the inhumanity the way it was taught by those in power. Killing others in the name of what? Killing others in the name of some god? some country? some ideology? Killing is killing, no matter what. May the day come that we will all say NO to the violence, NO to the killing, the beheadings in the fields. And YES to love, yes to mercy, and yes to good will. H.E.
