Your Findlay City Council met tonight, December 3rd. That means it is time for my 419 word (or less) summary. Ready. Set. Go. Firefighter Contract Tonight we passed a new contract with our firefighters. The contract, effective as of January 1, 2013 (that isn’t a misprint… 1/1/2013… eleven months ago) freezes wages while providing an opportunity to renegotiate 2015 wages and adds two years to the years before a new firefighter reaches maximum pay. It also gives firefighters the option to sell back up to 48 hours of Holivac (Holiday & Vacation) time. There was a lot of hard work that went into this contract by all parties involved: the IAFF (firefighter’s union) led by fire fighter Matt Cooper, Service-Safety Director Schmelzer & Law Director Rasmussen. Zoning Code Updates & Downtown Parking Legislation was passed that makes updates to our zoning code including new requirements for buffering around downtown parking lots with frontage on Main and/or Main Cross Streets. The new requirements will improve aesthetics by reducing the visual impact of parking lots. Our downtown is a special place MARCS Radio Upgrade The MARCS system, used by the police, is due for an upgrade in 2014. This upgrade was pulled into 2013 in order to obtain approximately $27,900 in discounts. Community Investment Areas (CRA) Revised CRA legislation received its second reading. This is good legislation that will make it less expensive to invest in property improvements anywhere within the city. Benefits are targeted towards older properties and bigger investments. Lastly, the CRA legislation gives our economic development team another tool in their ED tool belt. It is scheduled to receive its final reading on December 17. City Council Salary Legislation for 2014-15 City Council salaries received its second reading. This legislation provides for a 2% raise which is 2% too much in my book. If the fire fighters aren’t getting a raise then there is no way that I should. I will vote ‘no’ on this legislation unless the salary increase is eliminated. Great News Three members of the Findlay Police Department – Officers Don Dawson, Doug Marshall & Morgan Greeno – were recognized for their life saving efforts in June. I am at a loss for words here so I will just say Awesome! Bill Webb, a veteran of the Korean War, named the City as a beneficiary with instructions to purchase American flags or flag banners to use on Main Street. I met Bill while campaigning and quickly learned of Bill’s love for his country. Thank you Bill! Lastly, Happy Birthday to Council Clerk Denise DeVore and thank you to Law Director Rasmussen for NOT leading us in song!
