Your Moment of Soul : Perfect Angel - Minnie Riperton Of course, the late, great Minnie Riperton is best known for the now oft-parodied tune, Lovin You, but she has a far greater musical history. Her recording career began as a background singer on Fontana Bass immortal Rescue Me. From there, a stint as lead vocalist for Rotary Connection, a funk-rock group in the 60s on Chess Records. Minnie put out a first solo record, but it didnt sell and by 1973, she was a housewife and mother of two in Gainesville, FL. A college intern for Epic Records found a song off that solo album and wrote her bosses in LA. That resulted in Perfect Angel, her best selling album with the help of two songs and production work by Stevie Wonder. Sales went poorly again before she convinced them to release Lovin You as a single. The rest, as they say, is history. But sadly, Minnie was soon history herself. A year after Lovin You hit #1 on the charts, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy. She went public with her diagnosis while not disclosing that she was terminally ill. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter presented her with the American Cancer Societys Courage Award. She died one year later at age 31. So, I let others make fun of her biggest hit as I remember back when Minnie Riperton was a Perfect Angel...
