Zambia at 50 --- We have a dream! Yesterday I had a lengthy but very engaging conversation with one passionate Zambian entrepreneur, Wengo Ngala. Both of us have a dream and are hopeful that the time for Zambia and Africa to be saved and truly freed is nigh and it is now. We agreed that the development model of the last 50 years of independence that has concentrated on accumulation of foreign capital, foreign investment, foreign entrepreneurs at the expense of the local entrepreneurs in the name of FDI has failed to deliver. Development is about change and transformation and not accumulation of physical capital from the North that flies back in the night. Business and financial investment has the potential and a role in economic development, yes. But the time has come to give chance to the Zambian/African entrepreneur to partner with African governments in fostering the needed change and transformation. He/she is Africas/Zambias truest partner in development; he/she can be the real game changer; We have faith that the African entrepreneur will, through business help bring about a transformation that provides individuals and our societies more control over their own destiny; a kind of development that enriches the lives of individuals by widening their horizons and reducing their sense of isolation, dependency, despondency and deficiency. His/her home is here, his children are here, his mothers, aunties and gogos are here, he is here to stay and to make a difference, give him chance. We have a dream...!
