We dodged a bullet, Warren says in obvious relief and thankfulness. The tornado was right above us, we had 60 or 70 people in the church at that time — they easily could all have been killed. You look at all the damage [in the city], and it seems a lot of people should have been killed. According to Gene Brown, the regional executive presbyter, the towers were completely torn down by the powerful winds that struck the area, twisting them around and dropping them to the ground. The tornado also tore the roof off of the station building located next to the towers. We had two towers, side by side; one 700 feet, the other 500 feet, Warren says. It will cost about $1.5 million to replace the towers and another $1.5 million to replace the transmitter. We havent been inside of the station yet — the roof was tore off and rain flooded the interior — and the equipment inside is pretty sensitive. The church had just finished quite a bit of repair work to the station due to some earlier flooding, Brown says. Now, the two Christian stations they were managing, KWMS and KMCT, are off the air. According to a Facebook report by the The Cross, a Christian radio station in neighboring Monroe, Louisiana, thousands of homes and downtown businesses in West Monroe are still without power, with numerous schools in the area being closed due to damage and power outages. Brown observed many traffic lights down and trees uprooted in the area. But whats remarkable, he says, is that just last week international compassion ministry, Convoy of Hope, and its ministry, Rural Compassion, had stocked supplies and held a first responders training session at nearby Point Assembly of God, only a 20-mile drive northwest of West Monroe. Curtis Wilson, head of Rural Compassion in our area, has his men out right now going through the city, Brown says. Hes out there with his team, cleaning things up. Warren says that the churchs Wednesday evening services are cancelled, but if they can get a gas leak repaired, he hopes to have services on Sunday — even if only by candlelight. --Dan Van Veen ---------------------------------------------------------------------- **SPEED THE LIGHT PARTNERS WITH INFLUENCE MUSIC TO RAISE FUNDS FOR MISSIONARIES Through the hard work and sacrifice of Assemblies of God youth, each year millions of dollars are given to the Speed the Light program. The Speed the Light program equips AG missionaries with the transportation and communication equipment they need to dig water wells, rescue victims of human trafficking, and provide other vital resources to reach people around the world with the gospel message. Now Influence Music, a division of Influence Resources, is joining with Speed the Light to equip even more missionaries with the vital resources they need. Beginning on Speed the Light Sunday, October 19, through December 31, 2014, all proceeds from the sales of the three latest Influence Music albums will benefit Speed the Light in a special Season of Giving. There is an increasing need for resources on the mission field, says Sol Arledge, COO of the AG National Leadership and Resource Center. Through this key partnership with Speed the Light, churches and individuals can be personally inspired by the depth and passion of these albums or give them as gifts to friends, knowing that each purchase also represents souls being reached with the message of Christ. According to the Speed the Light website, 66,000 people are dying each day, having never heard the gospel message, and more than 3 billion people are still waiting to hear. The albums being offered — Modern Hymns of Revival, The Human Right (Songs for Justice), and A Beautiful Life — not only offer inspiring music for a variety of preferences, but motivate the listener to action. Few things can touch people as deeply or move them as strongly as music, Arledge says. But it is important to understand that as we participate in this Season of Giving, each of these albums are not just the work of talented artists and production — theyre also the result of passionate prayer. For a detailed description of each of the albums, available in digital download and CD format, go to influencemusic/Store. A total of 53 percent of potential voters indicated they wouldnt be as liable to support a nominee who didnt believe in God; to 41 percent it wouldnt matter, while 5 percent thought they would be more apt to back an atheist. Among Protestants, 71 percent polled said they would be less likely to favor an atheist presidential candidate. The overall 53 percent negative rating topped the list of 16 traits outlined in the poll. Close behind, 52 percent said they likely wouldnt vote for a candidate who had never held office, 36 percent specified they didnt particularly favor a candidate in his or her 70s, and 35 percent arent as prone to cast a ballot for someone who has admitted an extramarital affair. Fifth on the list of least attractive traits for voters was a candidate who did have experience as a politician in Washington (30 percent), followed by an office-seeker who is gay or lesbian (27 percent), and a marijuana user in the past (22 percent). Nearly one in five surveyed — 17 percent — said they are less likely to support a candidate who is an evangelical Christian. On the other hand, 21 percent believed they would back someone specifically because of their evangelical Christianity. For 58 percent, such religious beliefs didnt matter. More than four out of five (81 percent) say it doesnt make any difference if a candidate is Catholic, while 9 percent are more likely and just 8 percent less likely to care about a contenders Catholicism. The trait that is most advantageous for a candidate, according to the poll, is having served in the military, with 43 percent favorably disposed. Tied for second in positive attributes: a background either as a governor or business executive, both with one-third support of those surveyed. --Pentecostal Evangel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For a regularly updated list of upcoming significant Assemblies of God days and events--many linked to informational, registration or ordering pages--see the following address: . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AG-NEWS: The AG News & Information Service, (c) 2014 A service of the Assemblies of Gods Office of Public Relations.
