Hemkunt Sahib is an important Pilgrim destination revered by Sikh Community around the world. The Glacier disaster was so quick that the victims did not get time to reach safe location. One injured victim said “It Happened in a minute” which was followed by immediate chaos and panic among the returning group.T The injured are being transferred to Joshimath Hospital. The dead included two male, two female and two children. The administration, locals and workers of Eco Development Committee (EDC) reached the place as the news spread. The Unit of the I.T.B.P (Indo- Tibetan Border Police were also pressed into rescue operation. The injured were taken from the site to Ghangaria with the help of EDC where the injured were provided with the available aid. The area is accessible only by foot or mule. The rescue operation was facing difficulty at night. Orders for Helicopter service for the injured were given by the administration that could only begin early morning next day. The Sub Divisional Magistrate Nidhi Yadav also reached the disaster site to take charge of the rescue efforts. The health department 108 team also rushed to the location on mules and foot. The chief minister of the Himalayan state (Uttarakhand) Major General (Retd.) B.C. Khanduri has expressed deep sorrow and grief at this mishap. He has ordered for complete co-ordination between the health, army and administration personnel. Such Incident has occurred at Hemkunt Sahib for the first time. The area also has a Hindu Temple (Lakhan Pal adjacent to the Sikh Holy Shrine.
