beautiful song and heart wrenching video. let us not forget the monstrosities that the Black American people have suffered through. it was a disgusting time and it needs to be recognized, acknowledged, and accounted for. do not diminish the value of your fellow human and the history of their genealogy and the genealogy of people similar in color to them. do not diminish the struggle of a people with humor, if you are not a part of that struggle, if you do not know what it is like to have relatives or simply friends of the same color as you who deal with the lingering victimization daily. February is Black History month. To me, this is inappropriate since every other month is an unofficial White History month. As Morgan Freeman said, the relegat[ion] of an entire peoples cultural standings to a month is ridiculous [since] Black History is American History. Do not refuse to acknowledge history and the collective pain of a people that still rears its ugly head in an umbrella spectrum of passive humor, violence amongst Black brothers and sisters in ghettos, violence or mistreatment of Black bodies by Whites, and/or simply misrepresentation or marred perception on the characterization of a SKIN COLOR (Your skin color is NOT your character; it is your context.) It is important that you take this month (and hopefully, in the future, your daily life) as a non-Black person to empathize with other people who are, to this day, born into a life they did not choose but are forced to struggle with, simply by the color of their skin, the enslavement of their people and the animalistic discrimination that occurred years after. As a biracial male, I am a lot lighter-skinned than my brothers and sisters, and still was put through a subtle, less violent form of racism because to non-Black people, all they see are the physical characteristics (i.e. thicker nose, thicker lips, bigger cheeks, darker skin, etc.) that will forever define you as a person of the past. We are not people of the past. Our past is our context. Acknowledge it; do not prolong it. Get to know all people of our nation, all races, colors, ethnicities, etc., as people with personalities, values, and loved ones, before you constantly bring up, berate, or blame them for a past of victimization. It is important that you begin to show respect and unconditional love for your fellow humans who are different from you.
