Low pressure spun up along the tail end of the front over the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday afternoon, crossed the Florida Peninsula Tuesday evening, and is pummeling the eastern coast as of Wednesday evening. Winter Storm Watches, Warnings and Advisories Enlarge Winter Storm Watches, Warnings and Advisories That low is quickly intensifying as it moves north-northeastward, staying near or just off the Eastern Seaboard. This is a classic track for a significant East Coast storm. However, as is often the case, the difference between rain and snow hinges on how far south and east cold air can move into the storms precipitation zone -- and the small details could make a big difference for your travel plans, especially if you will be driving in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Heres an overview of how the rest of this storm should play out. Current Radar Enlarge Current Radar Wednesday Night Forecast Enlarge Wednesday Night Forecast Wednesday Overnight: Snowfall should quickly come to an end from the New York City area southward before midnight. Farther north, snow -- heavy at times -- will continue over much of New England into the evening. It will end from west to east through the overnight hours. Thanksgiving Day: The last of the snow will wind down in the morning over parts of Maine. In the wake of the storm, highs will be below average across the Northeast, but they should climb far enough above freezing to allow rapid improvement in road conditions. A weak clipper-type system following close behind Winter Storm Cato will add a bit of light snow to some of the areas in the Appalachians that received heavy snowfall Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. 48-Hour Snowfall Forecast Enlarge 48-Hour Snowfall Forecast Snowfall amounts and impacts: The inset map at right shows our latest 48-hour snowfall forecast. Bear in mind the amounts shown are in addition to any snow that has already fallen. For more snowfall maps with specific highways labeled, along with information on travel impacts, click here for our Winter Storm Cato news and impacts article. Total snowfall isnt the only thing to consider, however. Temperatures are close to the 32-degree mark for most of the affected area, so this is a heavy, wet snow. This has led to broken tree limbs and significant power outages in areas where the snow has been heaviest. But it also means less impact on drivers, especially where amounts are lighter. Roads in many cases have been just slushy or wet. Bear in mind that temperatures were in the 70s on Monday in parts of the Northeast, so ground temperatures are not very cold. But as night falls, snow may stick to roads more easily. The rate of snowfall is also important. Some areas, especially closest to the rain/snow line, could see snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour or more, especially where thunder accompanies the snow. Road conditions can deteriorate very quickly in snows of that intensity, as the snow can fall faster than road crews can clear it with plows. Even where the soil is warm, heavy rates of snowfall can allow snow to accumulate much faster than the ground can melt it. - Snowfall forecast: Map showing forecast snowfall totals over the next 48 hours. - Latest winter radar: See where any snow, freezing rain or sleet is falling now. - Wheres the cold: Is cold air building in Canada or Alaska? - Winter storm names: The entire list of names this season and the science behind how we name them. Winter Storm CATO Pummels the Northeast Winter storm CATO will produce a wide swath of snowfall from the Central Appalachians in West Virginia through Pennsylvania, southeastern New York, northern New Jersey to most of New England into Wednesday night. As much as 12 to 18 inches of snow could accumulate across parts of western Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire and a wide swath of shovelable snow is likely to affect nearly 20 million people. There is quite a cutoff in snowfall as you head toward the coast where surface temperatures are expected to be warm enough to limit heavy accumulations. This will mainly be east of the I-95 corridor. It will snow and it could become heavy for a time from Washington DC through Philadelphia to New York Wednesday afternoon and evening. It will get dicey for a few hours across these metro areas. They can pick up a quick 2 to 4 inches of snowfall. However with surface temperatures above freezing we anticipate that main Interstates such as I-95 will mainly be wet but reduced visibilities will have big impacts on very heavy travel. The story will change drastically though as you go even just a few miles inland from I-95. As much as 8 of snow is likely across western Virginia and West Virginia through central Pennsylvania with very difficult road travel. A bit farther north into southern New York, northern New Jersey 8 to 10 inches is expected. Still farther north the snow will become so heavy that as much as 12 to 18 inches could fall only 30 to 40 miles west of Boston through tonight. Boston itself will see as much as 3 to 5 inches. To compound air travel, east to northeast winds will increase late afternoon through evening for airport hubs in New York and Boston which will further worsen airport delays. CATO will exit Washington after 8PM, New York City after midnight and Boston after about 6AM. Snow will continue in northern New England through mid-morning Thanksgiving Day before heading toward the Canadian Maritimes. (MORE: Winter Storm Cato Forecast) Clipper System Clipper system brings a couple inches of snow from the Tennessee Valley through Mid-Atlantic in the wake of CATO tonight into Thanksgiving Day. I do not expect many impacts from this event. Western Snow Significant snows likely for the northern Rockies this weekend. A system will push in from the Pacific and spread a lot of moisture across the northern Rockies through the far northern portion of the Northern Plains this weekend. We are likely going to see feet of snow at the highest elevations of the eastern slopes of the mountains due to a prolonged period of upslope flow. Even across lower elevations of Montana through North Dakota a few inches of snow is likely. Millions of Americans have packed their bags and are hitting the road or heading to the airport for the Thanksgiving holiday. Winter Storm Cato, a clipper system and a western storm have thrown a wrench into travel plans for some of them. Current Radar Enlarge Current Radar AAA says this is expected to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel period since 2007. Some 41 million Americans are expected to travel by car for the holiday, and another 3.5 million will fly to their holiday destination. During the runup to Thanksgiving, the worst weather is expected to be in the Northwest, parts of the Rockies and Midwest, and along the East Coast. The nicest weather will stretch from California across the Southwest and into the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley. Lets step through the forecast from now through Turkey Day. Wednesday Overnight Wednesday Night Forecast Enlarge Wednesday Night Forecast Worst major airports: Hartford/Bradley (rain and snow) Worst highways: Interstate 90 from Albany to Boston (snow); Interstate 95 from Boston to the Canadian border (snow); Interstate 93 from the Boston area to St. Johnsbury, Vermont (snow) Unfortunately for East Coast travelers, a high-impact storm has struck on the busiest travel day of Thanksgiving week. Winter Storm Cato is tracking north-northeastward near the Atlantic coast. Cato is bringing a swath of snow to the interior with rain closer to the coast. Snow will wind down from south to north through the overnight hours across most of the Northeast. (DETAILS: Winter Storm Cato Forecast) Meanwhile, light snow and rain will fall in parts of the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Tennessee Valley, due to the clipper-type system. It will be cold behind this system with low temperatures plummeting below zero in parts of the Upper Midwest. In fact, temperatures have already dropped to -26°F in Minot, North Dakota as a result of this clipper. Much of the West is in good shape except for some lingering rain in Washington and some snow in parts of Montana. The southern Plains and Gulf Coast also look quiet. Thanksgiving Day Thursday Outlook Enlarge Thursday Outlook Worst major airports: Seattle and Portland (rain) Worst highways: Interstate 5 in Washington and Oregon (rain); Interstate 94 in North Dakota (light snow and ice); Interstate 79 in West Virginia and western Pennsylvania (snow showers) Winter Storm Cato will be almost completely out of the U.S. by sunrise, taking the snowfall with it. Cold air blasting south in the wake of the storm will likely trigger more lake-effect snows in the Great Lakes. The clipper-type system will also continue to track east, bringing snow showers to parts of the central Appalachians. Areas of rain and snow will continue in the Pacific Northwest, and a bit of snow and ice may accumulate in the northern Plains, but otherwise dry conditions are expected for most of the country. It will also be chilly for the East, while most of the West will see temperatures near to above average.light rain diffrent parts of area for bc canada usa and mexcio 30-40% chance of light rain 1-3 inches of light rain heavy rain for victor and vancouver bc canada western washington state western oregon state northwestern california state all way mexcio 60-100% heavy rain flooding diffrent parts of those area winter snow storm for parts of bc canada alberta canada sask canada all way new england state upper eastern state quebec canada marinetime canada 6-12 inches of snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy road condition snowfall for higher mountain or flatland area for parts of alaska state yukon canada western canada washington state oregon northern california state tahoe city california state idaho state wy state montana state and nd and sd state minnsota state fort france and thunder bay ontario canada 4 great lake area wisconsin northern indania ohio michigan state parts of ontario canada western nc state west virgina state pa state ny state new england state upper eastern state quebec canada and eastern canada 3-12 inches of snow blowing and driiting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy road condition frezzing rain montana state southern sask canada 1-3 inches of frezzing rain very dangerous drving and icy roads condition high wind warning for alaska state northern nwt canada nu canada minnsota state all way washington state oregon idaho wy state all way down texas parts of southern state tn state ky state arkansas missouri state iowa state 4 great lake area wisconsin il state indania ohio michigan state ontario canada eastern pa state ny state upper eastern state quebec canada eastern canada 22 or 40 mph winds windchill warning for alaska state all way nu canada western canada minnsota state upper mid western state wy state all way iowa wisconsin northern michigan state ontario canada northern quebec canada windchill be at -25 or 25 very cold windchill weather for yall foggy or ice foggy condition for bc canada alberta canada sask canada washington state oegon montana wy state colorado southern texas sc state nc state virgina west virgina ky state 4 great lake area wisconsin michigan state parts of ontario canada pa state manie state eastern canada visibilty be at 0-2 miles very dangerous drving and thick foggy or ice foggy condition right till by morning lift off by afternoon be caution keep eyes on it yall tune weather channel weather network wx cb radio scanner weather radio cell phone desktop laptop tablet weather yall be safe drive safe god bless yall bigger both thumbs up drivers everybody else here :) 10-4
