iSmuggler caught with 90 iPhones strapped to his body In an extreme #smuggling case, a #HongKong man was caught by police on Sunday when he strapped 94 #iPhone handsets to his body planning to make a fortune in the Chinese mainland. According to the customs officials’ examinations, he glued the iPhone handsets up and down on his chest and legs. The phones, mainly #iPhone6 and iPhone 5S, are valued at over 300,000 yuan (around $48,380). The unnamed man attracted the attention of customs officials by his weird movements at the arrival hall at Futian Checkpoint Station in south China’s Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. While he was going through the metal detecting gate, a loud alarm was heard. Why he did not think the detector would go off, is unclear so far. He was then taken to a body check where dozens of iPhones were found across his body. He is a typical water passenger (“Shuike” in Chinese), said police, referring to people who visit Hong Kong and Macao very frequently to smuggle electronic products, food, milk powder and other goods that are sold at a much higher price in the Chinese mainland. A customs official from Shenzhen’s Huanggang Port said it’s common for water passengers to use their bodies as transporting “vehicles” in smuggling. Since December last year, Huanggang police have found 18 such smuggling cases among which high-valued electronic products are the most popular. Soon after the case was exposed, internet users on social media reacted differently. Some blamed his wrong doing and joked he was an “iPhone man” while others concluded that the high taxes on the Chinese mainland are also to blame amid the rampant smuggling cases in recent years.
