interesting to me that all of the commenters are women (of course that also likely reflects most of the subscribers to SUPPRESSED HISTORIES as well as my own cohort, BUT...) who were not authorized for combat in those days. i JUST missed the draft (it was over by the time my number would have come up, whatever it was), i remember hitching in the opposite direction to the necessary on my 18th birthday and thinking: oh shit. i decided to go and register as a conscientious objector. a friend who i didnt know at the time i later learned had been GRANTED his c.o. status and spent the requisite time serving as an orderly in hospitals treating the returning wounded. assuredly lessening his own PHYSICAL PERIL and contribution to the heinous policy but hardly escaping the EFFECT of the atrocity. sad, at the very least, that it yet goes on and on, only the locales change.
