is in the last-week home stretch of work on the Tenth Anniversary Edition of Record Lonesome Night, which is basically Bookworm and Paper Nickels combined: part Memoir, part Album History, part Inspirational Manual. Heres a tiny excerpt: WHEN A SONG GETS ITS TICKET PUNCHED I recall a Saturday at The Tranzac in 2004: the Sundowners - myself, James Thomson, David Baxter, Treasa Levasseur - are recently formed. “Three Thousand Miles” is still new. We’re playing our 4-7 pm spot and this guy comes in who I’ve seen around. I’ve been told he’s a junkie. I don’t know much about him. I’ve talked to him a few times. He’s made of sinew, wearing a t-shirt with cut-off shoulders, and big aviator sunglasses. I’ve met some of his family, too, who come by sometimes, though never when he does. Anyway, he sits at the table closest to the band and takes out a piece of newspaper, which he keeps smoothing against the table. We’re playing “Three Thousand Miles” and I suddenly realize, as I’m singing, that he’s crying. I can’t see his eyes behind those big shades, but the way he’s listening, I can feel the song rocking him. When it ends, he gets up, comes over to the band, takes off his glasses and his eyes are red. His voice breaks when he says, “Corin… I love getting high. Would you… could you play that song again?” We play “Three Thousand Miles” a second time and he rocks gently, smoothing out the paper. When our set’s done he shows it to me; it’s his brother’s obituary. His brother died the week before and he tells me that from the moment he first heard “Three Thousand Miles,” he thought of it as his brother’s song. There are moments a song gets its ticket punched. The gates open and it gets sucked straight up into Song Heaven. “Three Thousand Miles” has had its passport stamped more than anything I’ve written. That song’s got a spot at the bar up there and never pays for a single drink. Are you intrigued? Do you trust me to deliver? Is this 95 pg. gorgeousity something youre gonna wanna leaf through, and have on your shelf? Because I need you, comrades. I need your help to get er done.
