ok. PIPE SMOKING 101: this is for general tobbacco cut so modify accordingly. Sprinkle tabbaco loosely into pipe untill full, next tamp it using your finger evenly (you can buy an official pipe tamper if you wish) it should still feel springy expereince will tell you how much. too tight and theres no draw, too loose and it will burn too fast and be hotter. add more tobbaco and repeat process. light a match(never a lighter as it flavours the tobbaco) and slowely light the pipe while taking strong lengthy draws, move the match in a circular motion to give you an even burn, keep drawing on it untill its really going (there will be considrable smoke) next take your tamper (or finger that can no longer feel heat from pipe smoking) slowely tamp it evenly in a circular motion while drawing on the pipe. this will create a cap on the tobbaco witch is important for having that long satisfying pipe smoke youve been looking forward to. this will somewhat extingish the pipe slightly, take another match and repeat the lighting process (drawing heavily) now that its lit properly you can sit ponder and enjoy it for a good 15-30 minutes depending on the size of your bowl. you may need to reliight it once or twice. in scotland and ireland they actually have pipe smoking competitions (who can light it the most perfectly and use the fewest matches while smoking the entire contents). Next is how to hold you pipe, if you have a strait pipe keep the bit (end that you draw from) pointed downwards as juices from the moist pipe tobbacco will otherwise flow into the burning tobbaco and cause it to taste acrid. if you have a pipe that is angled (refered to as a turn) you dont need to hold the bit in such a downward angle, they also often have a spot drilled into them to collect extra moisture. hold the pipe so you can cover it with your thumb like so (see photo), you can then cover the top of the pipe with your thumb and control the amount of oxygen it recieves. when finished tap the pipe on a pipe ashtray witch has a little knob to whack onto or simply whack the balm of your hand with it and get rid of excess tobbacco. take it apart and blow excess moisture out and your done. clean your pipe regularly with pipe cleaners. when buying a pipe never buy a cheap varnished barrel pipe(they used to come cheap in a barrel) as the varnish wont allow the pipe to breath and will make it unpleasantly hot to smoke, turning many a would be pipe smoker into a cheap ciggerete smoker. a corn cob is the mst ecenomical pipe that is decent to smoke from. a real briar wood pipe is always hand made and if you like smoking a pipe quite worth it, they are normally graded by a pipe grader by pips or dots, depending on the quality of wood and craftmanship. other good woods are cherry or pair root althoug they burn a little hotter
