reposted from another community for my Boulder friends, as well Once Upon a Culture: Or – Man on the street shit. OMG, the distance this grasshopper has traveled…over the weekend, I strolled down Walnut St. only to find myself walking into the St. Julian Hotel. The massive lobby area was full of people, life and music. The band was top rate and the crowd approved. I found a high-back cushioned sofa, spread my crap out and settled in for the show. During break time for the band, the couple sitting across from me asked me a question: “Why are you here tonight” the woman asked me. I said “I don’t know. I just walked by and saw how crowded it was, so I walked in.” The lady leaned in closer and asked me my name and I told her, Alan. I then asked her, her name and she told me it was Eve. I then asked if Eve was her given name and she said no. “I was born in China, I am Chinese.” At this point, her male companion reaches across the table, shakes my hand and introduces himself as Michael. I asked Eve what she did. She said “I am a consultant.” I asked her what type of consulting she did and she said “I am a PHD Chemist with an MBA so my consulting expertise is in the area of branding and marketing certain compounds.” I thought to myself “don’t open your mouth Clark and let Eve find out how full of shit you are, half the time.” So, I turned my attention to Michael, who looked so relaxed, that I thought he was probably stoned, and I asked “well, what do you do, Michael?” Before Michael could respond, Eve eased in and said “today is a big day for us, Michael just received his 600th patent in the field of micro-electronics.” Wow – I thought to myself – before they ask me what I do, I’ll change the subject. So I decided to go all metaphysical on them. I asked them if they were meditators and stuff. They said yes, they were; so I thought I would show off a bit. I told them about how I had recently discovered that I was more of the watcher of my thoughts now, whereas I used to be my thoughts. I thought, ok, that should impress em. Eve said “ever since I was a very young girl, I have been the observer of my thinking and not the thoughts themselves.” Michael then commented, in a hushed, slow voice that he never thought that any of it mattered. He said “I was pretty young when it occurred to me that my thoughts about me and what I thought about myself were way more important, than what they thought about me. How could anyone judge me, without knowing me as well as I know myself.” By this time, the band had returned from their break and the music drowned out any further possibility of any discussion. I got up, said goodnight, and headed home. Wow. Boulder is bolder and I feel like a hayseed at times. You can take the boy out of the country (as in hee-haw), but you can’t’ take the country out of the boy. Signed: jr. grasshopper, from Darke County, Ohio, reporting live from the field.
