shared-----view of the upper portion or more residential area of Scotts Mills, OR circa 1905. Jim Hays, of the Scotts Mills Museum, helped us to identify some of the buildings in this photo. The white tower in the lower right was used as a water tower. The building with a steeple just above that was the local school built in 1893 and replaced in 1914. The new school was built right next to the old one which was then moved across the street until it was eventually torn down. The Friends Church, also built in 1893 is in the upper middle of this photo and it is still in use today. Are you able to identify any of the additional buildings in this photo? If so, please let us know in the comments. Have a wonderful weekend! Austin This photo shows the upper part of the town of Scotts Mills. This town is in Marion County, twenty seven miles east of Salem and forty five miles due south of Portland. It is in a rich hilly region dotted with farms and groves of fir and oak. On the west, the Coast Range Mountains with the intervening foot hills present a scene of beauty. East of Scotts Mills within seven miles is the Southern Pacific railroad which passes through Mt. Angel and Silverton. Everyone who visits Scotts Mills is impressed with the great beauty of its surroundings. Scotts Mills is a village of about three hundred inhabitants. One of its most remarkable features is its healthful climate. Fevers and agues are almost unknown. Saloons, gambling houses and other dens of vice are strictly prohibited by its inhabitants.
