thanks William Tomorrow What does the future bode when legal adoption is a failed social experiment, a created reality past its time? A retired Family Court judge in an address at Monash University in November 2013 posed the crucial question: ”Arising out of the terrible treatment of a significant portion of the population over many decades, is adoption a sustainable concept today?” The evidence to the contrary is immutable. Either a lie is sustained for a lifetime or there is sense of abandonment for the child; for most mothers there is remorse, guilt and shame; siblings are left in a state of doubt; and adopters are forever wary for they live the lie that they are parents rather than guardians. There are no winners: adoption, as it stands, flaunts Nature and society pays the price for its hypocrisy and hubris. And it seems most Australians agree as total adoptions in Australia have dropped from around 1500 a year in 1988 to 329 in 2013. The current Liberal Prime Minister has promised reform in 2014 to increase adoption rates but his control is limited to overseas adoptions. Except for the Territories, adoption is still in the State’s bailiwick and this is unlikely to change. So it is up to the States to arrive at uniformity: a challenge they are finding impossible to overcome for to tinker with an imperfect concept is to feed a monster. Adoption, notionally tied into our faltering capitalist society through property ownership law and inheritance, is an absolute contradiction, a fatal misconception that de-stabilises any social system tolerating its incorporation. Demolish adoption. It’s an overworked ruin.
