the I here is not ARC..but Pam from cruelty page KIJIJI UPDATE: Most of you know that a few weeks ago I had a lengthy conversation with Shawn Mcintyre of Kijiji Canada. We discussed the things Kijiji needed to do to stop unethical and illegal breeders from using their site. I told you after Shawn and I spoke that I would soon be able to let you know what changes Kijiji is willing and indeed going to make at this time. Those changes will be implemented this week. He gave me a heads up so I can forward the information on to you. One of the things that was a huge issue for me, was the fact that these breeders had complete anonymity. Starting this week, all ads on the pet pages will cost $4.99 . You may not think that is a lot to pay for an ad but it has great value! Every ad must be paid by credit card. This means that for every person posting an ad, there will be a name and an address associated with that post. This makes those breeders no longer transparent. This should make many Back Yard Breeders and Brokers and Host Families think twice about posting now. Approved Rescues and Shelters will not have to pay a posting fee. The post has an expiration date so when it expires, the seller must repost again paying 4.99 and using a credit card. These transactions keep records of how often a person posts. There can be no editing of an ad. Commercial breeders typically just change birthdates on the ad as a new litter is born. Some sellers had 20,000 views on their ads because they continuously edited it. They can no longer do that. Half of the money raised by these ads will be going to animal welfare initiatives and the rest to hire more staff to monitor the ads more effectively. After they have had an opportunity to measure the impact of this launch, Kijiji would like the opportunity to discuss with me the next steps and making some of the policy changes we talked about. Of course I have a list of changes as long as my arm but for the moment, they will have to wait. We (KSSP) will also be keeping stat reports to see if the change has impacted the numbers.
