the Independence of the Congo for beginners: On June 30th 1960, the Congo got its independence. Kasa-Vubu and Lumumba became respectively, President and Prime Minister. Nationalist and clever, Lumumba had a vision for his Country that his own People didn’t understand and that the western Countries didn’t approve of. USA and Belgium decided to destabilize Lumumba’s Government, involving loads of millions of dollars, which led to mutinies, secessions and a general chaos within the young Republic. Those facts were acknowledged by both Countries. In the middle of the Cold War, Lumumba got left with no choice but seeking Soviet Union’s help, giving the West the opportunity that it had been looking for. They used Kasa-Vubu, Mobutu (who was Chief Commander of the Congolese Army then, and working for CIA) and the UN to neutralize Lumumba. Treated like a criminal, Lumumba got arrested, executed and The Congo lost its independence and its dignity.
