ts wrong with the Hawkeyes? Theyre slow and stupid. Hayden Fry knew he didnt have the speed players. He had the big srong players. The Hawks would keep pounding away with the running game. Sometmes theyd get stopped. Some times they wouldnt. But, either way, by the fourth quarter Iowas offensive line would wear down the defensive line allowing us to run almost at will. Weisman never got stopped. He averaged 8.9 yards per carry. We ran him 8 times. After the first two scores the announcers were saying that Maryland was going to have to recruit some bigger stronger defenseive linemen to play in the Big 10 or teams like Iowa would run all over them. Then what did we do? We played poorly on defense and let them get ahead by 3 points. As soon as we got behind we totally abandoned the running game. No Iowa quarterback can pass over 50 times and win a game. Good old Kirk left Ruddock in the whole game, even when it was obvious that we needed a quarterback in there who could run and scramble to avoid the rush. Ruddock needs four seconds to throw and when he doesnt ge that he puts his head down and starts looking for a place to fall. Beathard with better ability to get away from the rush make plays was our best hope of winning that game. If your defense is slow and has trouble stopping the run youve got to be able to run the football and keep time of possession in your favor to have much of a chance. Another thing we never do is throw the ball downfield. Iowas longest pass completion was 19 yards.Youve got to throw deep once in awhile to keep the linebackers and the secondary honest. Otherwise they just put 8 or 9 men in the box and stop your running and short passing games. If these things are so obvious to me, why arent they obvious to the Iowa coaching staff?
