up in often difficult cultural and racially diverse environments (UK, USA and Ethiopia) in the turbulent Sixties and Seventies. In all the years of growing up in this grander than life family, Dad was the last word, but I never once heard him go against the train of thought being advanced by his wife - whom he called Loui - they were the invincible dynamic duo, always agreeing with each other and as children we lost every battle with them. In their loving way, behind their closed boardroom, aka the Master Bedroom, they would emerge and give us a reprise, through the commander of the family troop saying the commander in chief had thought over the issue and we could do the activity that was denied or go to the place before hand rejected in conference. Daddy taught me many things in life, one of them fight for what you believe in, be fair and honest all the time, show love and great loyalty to your President, nation and leaders, love for who you are an African, Malawian and Swazi Ngoni ala Maseko-Gomani.... with great heritage to full rooms in all these. One of the greatest and memorable values Dad taught me was the love and support of family - we are family and we will always support each other to outsiders, if there is anything wrong, we will tell you in the confines of our homestead. This is truly a great ethos portrayed by him through words and deeds not only the resolve for us his children, but also his larger family - his parents, brothers and sister and their families. He often sat silently for hours at the dinner table, listening (as was his fashion at UN meetings as the Malawi Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the UN and US) without saying a word; but then in the end putting his stand on the issues being discussed, often times ending hours of heated debate, many times with one or two words when many had been put forward. Dad, you are truly Mkulumadzi (Big Waters) and to quote George who at your 60th wedding anniversary in 2010, it has been truly a blessed honor being your ...(daughter) I ask all my family, friends and colleagues to join me in dancing this beloved birthday song by the maestro of modern dance music Stevie Wonder (Im told he cant dance, due to weak leg muscles) please join me to honor my Dad on his special day.
