would like to pay a final homage my old, ever-present mistress, running. Over the years, we shared a memorable union of indubitable harmony. Mentally, the gentle rush of your self-regulating hormones kept my mind in bliss for many hours after spending time with you, thus making me feel like my body was buzzing in rhythmic motion as I sat on the couch. Physically, you were my fierce biological advocate, mitigating the dangers of diabetes, hypertension, depression, and a whole host of other ailments that could reek havoc on my body. However, our relationship came at a cost. Carrying three times my body weight with each stride over the course of thirty-three years did irreversible damage to my knees. Now, my ankle is also a casualty, as I feel like a rock is stuck in my joint. You are no longer the object of my joy, but rather a dreadful reminder of my human limitations. A new chapter has come to the fore: for this day evermore, I shall not run. Time to evolve.
