yemen Advertisement On Sept. 8, an 8-year-old girl in Yemen died after sustaining severe vaginal injuries and internal bleeding on her wedding night. Her groom was 40 years old. The girl, Rawan, was forced to become a child bride, a common practice in rural areas of the region. In 2009, Yemen passed a law stating child brides could be no younger than 17 years old, but it was repealed after a wave of lawmakers called it “un-Islamic.” Current law allows parents to decide when their children will marry. Nevertheless, activists in Yemen are calling for the arrest and prosecution of Rawan’s family and husband. However, the practice of marrying off young children is so widely accepted in Yemen, it doesn’t seem that Rawan will receive justice.
