you know, I once read and article about the LA blackout a while back, and people had called into 911 reporting this gaseous haze streaking through the dark night sky. The 911 operators had to explain to these people that what they are seeing was the Milky Way, their galaxy. It is hard to believe that people like this exist, ones who have never seen the Milky Way on such a dark night. Growing up for me out in the country, seeing the Milky Way was just part of the norm. I think that every child should have the chance to see the Milky Way in person, and not via some book or video. Take your children out this summer to a stargazing party, or to a friend/family member that may have a nice dark secluded location with low light pollution. Teach them the constellations, show them the visible planets, point out the Messier and Nebula, have them leave the Earth once in their lifetime.
