A matter of finding the right wavelength By Jane Will SmithA Taiwanese composer and conductor says music played at a specific sound wavelength can positively affect the brain, making people happier and less stressed. Specking through an interpreter, Dr Chen Gong Xiong expounded his theory of how music played with a sound wavelength of 7.5 beats per second created harmony between the left and right sides of the brain, making people calmer and more loving. It would also strengthen the immune system, increase their memory and endurance, and heighten their creativity. Too often people spent the day using their left brains, leaving them feeling tired and stressed, but listening to music of a specific wavelength would calm their over-worked left brain and stir their right brain, he said. He believed the effect was more pronounced if people did not actually notice the music playing in the background, because it meant neither side of the brain was processing the music. “When you sleep at night you should play it and it is more effective because you don’t hear it,” he said. “The main point is the wavelength. The music is just the clothes.” A composer of more than 200 musical works, Dr Chen is on an eight-venue tour of New Zealand speaking to audiences about his idea on music. He spoke in Dunedin Public Art Gallery earlier this week.
