1 Minute Devotional (Friday November 22, 2013) The devotional today is from Sunday Morning’s Message “Digging Again The Old Wells” (Genesis 26:15-19) Text: For all the wells which his fathers servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth. 16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we. 17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 19 And Isaacs servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water. Genesis 26:15-19 (KJV) So the Philistines filled in all the wells that his fathers servants had dug during his father Abrahams lifetime. 16 Finally, Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us! Youve become more powerful than we are.” 17 So Isaac moved away. He set up his tents in the Gerar Valley and lived there. 18 He dug out the wells that had been dug during his father Abrahams lifetime. The Philistines had filled them in after Abrahams death. He gave them the same names that his father had given them. 19 Isaacs servants dug in the valley and found a spring-fed well. Genesis 26:15-19 (GW) It might be your obedience needs “re-digging”! When you examine the scriptures, you will find a correlation between “faith” and “obedience”. Jesus said that the determining factor of our abiding in His love is keeping His commandments (John 15:10) Jesus requires obedience. It is not what we say but rather what we do that determines if we are disciples of Christ. Jesus said, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46) In this passage both builders prayed to Him and were witnesses that He was Lord but Jesus rebukes them for their disobedience to His teachings. Jesus set the example for us as revealed in Hebrews 5:8-9. “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;” Whether it is vision, faith, obedience or some other area of your life that needs re-digging, or a new area for you that needs digging – keep digging. Follow the example of Isaac’s servants. After re-digging the wells of Abraham, Isaacs’s servants went out and dug a new well (Genesis 26:19). What areas do you need to be digging today?
