My association with Balika Niketan an untold tale: Prerna Kasturi Sarkar Bagui Port Blair, Mar 7 She doesn’t like to confine herself in the folds of the routine bound life. We have been seeing her performing on stage – be it dancing or singing. An avid children lover, she also has a close association with the girls of Balika Niketan, a home exclusively meant for girls’ in the vicinity of G.B. Pant Hospital. An ardent wife, a mother of two and a very compassionate and down to earth lady, she is Mrs. Prerna Bali, whom our Reporter had a chance meeting at a vantage point in the town on the eve of Women’s Day. Searching for the note pad and pen I started asking few questions to know about her and her opinion about Women’s Day Celebration. The excerpts of the interview taken on the spot without any preparation…………. DT: Please share with us your opinion about these Islands? P.B.: Andaman is a beautiful and lovely place and we had some wonderful experience here ever since we came here. We love to experience Nature in all its manifestations here and have been blessed with the opportunity of meeting some kind hearted people. Port Blair has its own charm – no traffic congestion, no pollution. This is a wonderful place for creative people and for those who have a spiritual inclination. Q According to you which is the most attractive place in these Islands? I have been to the North ( Diglipur), to Little Andaman and also visited parts of Nicobar. But .... (thinking) from that angle I can’t designate one place to be the most beautiful. I love the entire group of Islands. Q How do you spend your time? I love music, it is meditation for me. I have been practising music for quite a long time. I try to maintain a balance between my house hold and my outside assignments. I maintain my little kitchen garden, love trying out new recipes sometime, practice some yoga in the morning and want to live a life of complete satisfaction. I like to break routine, except for my morning yoga regime. Q How did you get associated with Balika Niketan? Actually, the Social Welfare Dept., A & N Administration requested me to visit the Home and help the girls to better their communication skills. Since I conduct workshops on developing thinking skills in children, I got associated with them. And after that there was no looking back for me. I went there and I fell in love with the girls. I want to do lots for them – try to fill in the gaps wherever needed and try to give them a little more as I would do for my own children. Q Your message on Women’s Day. Women just need to be celebrating themselves on this day. A woman according to me is complete in herself – she is versatile, adaptable and better equipped for doing anything and everything. So they should believe in themselves and should show little bit of respect for other women (laughing….). Saga of hamlet born swimming champion “Winning is not the ultimate end, participation is what counts”, Naw Polisju Mary Pee Port Blair, March 7 Born on December 13, 1993 in a village called Karmatang 10, North Andaman, the 20 year old bubbly, jovial and outspoken personality, Naw Polisju is the proud daughter of Saw Biber and Naw Mathintay. Currently pursuing her B.A in Historical Studies form Mahatma Gandhi College, Mayabunder, her dream is to become a teacher someday. Naw Polisju came to limelight when she swam her way to victory in the RSC Open Sea Swimming Championship from the historic Ross to Aberdeen Jetty covering a distance of 1.4 km on March 5, 2014. An avid football fan, Naw Polisju also loves to play Throw ball, Volleyball, Badminton and Athletic events. She had no formal training in swimming but won the championship because of her determination and encouragements form her loved ones and close friends. Swimming was like a normal routine for her. Since childhood she used to play near the river stream which was close to her house. With a wide smile she declares, “All Karens are inborn swimmers and no formal training is required.” Narrating her experience on winning the swimming championship, Naw Polisju recalled the scary yet exhilarating experience while swimming from Ross to Aberdeen. Since this was her first ever experience of swimming in the open sea. “When the event was flagged off, I was a little doubtful of making it through, but I was determined to finish the race no matter I win or lose. All I wanted was to participate and see how difficult was the task. While swimming half way through I was exhausted and fears prelude my mind. But pictures of my parents and siblings cheering me on gave me the strength, although they were not physically present on that day. My faith in God and sincere prayers of my close friends and family members made me win this championship. I owe my deepest gratitude to them for their fervent support and also to my other two friends Naw Baby and Naw Ansia who swam along with me. Winning this feat was a happy moment for me, but on the other hand my other two friends who are equally good swimmers couldn’t win the competition makes me sad. Had the three of us won the competition this would have been the best day of our life, but I am proud of their sportsmanship. Nevertheless, opportunities will knock our doors and we will participate again. Altogether it was a learning experience for me and this feat has given me more inspiration to give my extra best the next time I participate in swimming competition.” Says the elated swimmer. Naw Polisju also expressed her happiness on receiving the prize from the Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Lt. Gen (Retd) A.K.Singh and declared this moment to be one of the most memorable experience of her life. Her message to budding swimmers is that “Swimming is not an easy task, but with practice and perseverance comes perfection. Winning is not the ultimate end, participation is what counts.” She also expressed her sincere thanks and gratitude to the organizers of this swimming competition, her friends and family members for giving her an opportunity to participate in this mega event.
