#16. Mogwai - Simon Ferocious (Rave Tapes, Rock Action Records, 1/20/14) While I now associate Mogwai with a wild night in Nashville with my buddy Santino, this record took some time to win me over, as I was expecting the huge bombastic death-to-everything rock that they perfected back in 1997 with Young Team. However, it grew on me instantly, and as the year continued, I found myself listening to it again and again. Mogwai make a strange combination of the post-rock bombast theyre known for with some 70s electronic John Carpenter keyboard influences as well. The result is a record that is both familiar and new at the same time, constantly evolving their sound. This is Simon Ferocious, a great song off the record, as well as a video that perfectly captures that feeling of weightlessness.
