2 of our clients have received door knocks at their properties for fire damage repairs already !! In both cases the customer turned them away. Here is how the law reads to protect you, the consumer, from illegal contractors. When a disaster has been declared, it is absolutely illegal for anyone to contact you regarding any type of repair, estimate, appraisal etc for the first 6 business days. Absolutely no exceptions. Any work where the total amount of money involved equals $500 or more, even if it is just a portion of the project, requires a State licensed, bonded and insured contractor. No exceptions to the law. Both violations are felonies. In our customers cases they were educated and reported the incident to the State License Board. The State is aggressive and pro-active right now to stop all of the opportunist people who are committing felonies. Please remember to check the State License Board at cslb.ca.gov for license verification and status as well as liability insurance, bonds and workmans compensation coverage for their workers.
