Watching the tour replay yesterday, hearing Phil and Paul and watching Christian Van Velde show us a preview of riding up Jenkin Road which (by various accounts) ranged from 18% grade to 33% I thought oh crap. Thirty-three percent is pretty much impossible even for pros. Youd need ropes and crampons. Being a data freak I found a decent map here: letour/le-tour/2014/us/stage-2.html Then I went over to ridewithgps and mapped the Jenkins segment and looked at the elevation profile. Thats saved here: ridewithgps/routes/5248759 It does kick up above 12 percent for a while and thats steep. Pros even struggle on 12 percent. But 33 percent, as I say thats crap and a bit negligent on the part of the announcers.
