70 years ago today my Grandfather was a scared Indiana farm boy on a troop transport steaming toward a beach called Normandy. When the gate dropped Sgt. Donald E. Moehring saw an ocean of blood before him, and dead American bodies seeming more numerous than the grains of sand scattered on a red beach. As bullets flew past him his heart raced and all he wanted was to be back home but he had a job to do and a family to fight for. He survived Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and was injured in the Battle of Luxembourg. A German grenade went off in his fox hole and almost killed him. Returning home he cared for his family and grand kids before cancer took him in 1986. He never spoke much of D-Day, probably because he did not want to re live it or be labeled a hero. Thank you Grandpa.
