A Battle for Nothing between 2k11 & 2k12 22, SEP,2014 What started off as a small tiff between a few individuals at the ‘Dandiya Night’ turned out to be one of the most unsavoury events that BIT has ever witnessed since its inception. The proverbial quote, ‘making a mountain out of a mole hill’ would be apt to describe the situation that unfurled on Saturday night. Emotions were running high, egos had a free rein and abuses were traded with ease. A stand-off between the 2k11 and 2k12 batches put the faculty and a lot of students on tenterhooks till the wee hours of Sunday. The ordeal which started at around 10:30 in the night was punctuated by a frequent volley of expletives and flexing muscles. Many members of the administration including the Vice-Chancellor of the institute arrived at the site to try and pacify the students. The light drizzle that occurred at regular events could not mellow the students and the voices reached a crescendo with the passing of every hour. Most of the people who were swaying with anger had no idea whatsoever about why they were there and how it all started. Rumors were afloat, and some fence sitters tried to incite the crowd with slogans and agitating comments. Thankfully, the students grew tired and retreated to their respective hostels at around 4 am in the morning. The administration has launched a strict investigation on the involved parties in the matter. The known victims of the unfortunate incident were called to the DSW’s office on Sunday morning, and a strict course of action was decided upon. The DSW and hostel wardens also visited all the hostels and appealed to the students to maintain their calm. He reminded them of the glorious past of the institute and the bright future that the students have in front of them. He tried to instil the sense of brotherhood among the students and asked them to focus on their career. He assured all hostel residents that the guilty students would be strictly dealt with immediately.The present situation has forced the authorities to impose an in-time restriction on the boys for a few days. All residents of the hostels have to be in their respective rooms by 6 pm and not move around for their own security. Also, additional guards have been assigned to H12 and H13 for the same. Unrest still largely prevails among the 2 batches. All the students of 2k12 have been banned from the DC Hub. Club activities and posts are currently on hold till the inter-batch issue is resolved. Students are still looking for means to get their voices heard. We hope that common sense prevails and that the present impasse finds a cordial solution. We also urge students to not trust baseless rumours and to maintain a level head in face of inflammatory comments. It is only through a peaceful and effective process that this matter can finally be put to rest. Note: No individuals have been named in this account. The root cause of the clash were multiple incidents involving students from both batches before and after the event, the details of which are currently being investigated-vishesh ·
