A FYI for anyone out there who cannot get updates for Microsoft XP - TopicsExpress

A FYI for anyone out there who cannot get updates for Microsoft XP any longer. I am at my family business and have been asked to change out the POS or Point of Sale system before heading to Peru. This system is 20 years old and on a proprietary database from 1995 on a Windows NT Server OS with Microsoft Offices Excel and Access database. I really enjoy Windows XP and only now found that Microsoft is no longer supporting this OS as of April 8, 2014. I also have BIG issues with the Windows 8 and 8.1 OS that Microsoft wants everyone to use... It is fully consumer based and definitely NOT something that a business would want to run a POS system on... As I look at the Windows 8, it is total crapola. I have several stories about that, but that is not what I want to say here. I did install fresh copies of Windows XP on my old tower as well as my mothers towers, which will be the new Server and Workstation for the store POS system. AS I did, and hearing that Microsoft was no longer going to support Windows XP in less than a week now, I went to the Microsoft Updates Page... And guess what, Microsoft is really messing with people, saying on the website that the Updates Can No Longer Be Updated... even as they say it will be supported until April 8.... Thats REALLY MESSED UP! Bill Gates and Microsoft are extorting the worlds business owners again! This is NOT a LITTLE DEAL! THIS IS HUGE! I used to build computers in the 90s and 00s, and I also was a Network Administrator and communications tech... among other things... So... I went to see what other ways of getting the Microsoft updates, installing 1 update at a time, I could do and see IF I could get back into the normal Updates Page... Here is what I found. For code writers and IT personnel, when we were testing Windows XP Beta in the 90s... We always had sideline updates where we could test or write code into... Well, the Windows Service Pack 3 is the critical thing to get all working on a clean install... That IS NOT BEING OFFERED ON THE WINDOWS XP UPDATE PAGE... I had to go to an old Service Pack 3 IT Version and it worked! microsoft/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 With that, I am able to get a clean install of Windows XP with all updates, Service Packs, Security Patches and so on... IT WORKED! I also formatted all my extra hard drives on those towers in NTFS and installed clean Windows XP OS on to each... I have 3 copies now that are fully updated. That way, IF there is an issue with the one I am running on, then I can mirror another fresh copy with all updates already installed to use without having to run the newer Operating Systems (OS) that Microsoft is pushing but is crap! So... this is what I have been doing these past days... I will head to Peru as I get all this POS system taken care of for my family, as this is how they make their $$$.. and no one else these past years has been able to get this accomplished... even since it was a database on a proprietary NT Server tower... haha... I can crack and hack that one... no prob... but will it work as I upgrade with new hardware??? I wont know til this weekend when I can pull that hard drive and install on one of the newly formatted XP towers... If not, we start all over and I will use a Linux system on these newly formatted Windows XP towers... Either way, those are my options and that IS my intent! Wish me luck! Pass this link on to anyone formatting Windows XP and who cannot get updates at this time... That is why I am posting to share... LOVE! bb
