A Friendly reminder... What Should Our Worship - TopicsExpress

A Friendly reminder... What Should Our Worship Emphasize? Because that’s what’s at stake, right? Worship is remembering - looking back to what was written in the Bible, trusting the finished work of Christ on the cross, dying and being raised to new life through the resurrection of Jesus. In worship, we remember and we respond. Worship is present day - worship is about being honest with our feelings and circumstances today. It’s about reaching out and claiming the promises of God for ourselves and our families. It’s about having a “now” faith in not only the God who was, but the God who is - He loves us, is fighting for us, and has already won the battle. Worship is looking ahead - Life as a Christian will always be marked with a little angst. We live in this world, but look forward to the coming Kingdom when all will be made right. When every tear will be wiped away. Simply asking, “What will be cool?” or “What will blow people’s minds?” isnt the right question. Past. Present. Future. This is what needs emphasized in our worship. How you do that will depend on your community, your city, your particular demographic. Whether you use flannel boards, videos, choirs, or rock bands, we need to bring our people into contact with the God who was, and is, and is to come. And we need to lead them with burning hearts, compassion, love, and pastoral care. Stay Connected: Here’s the bottom line: don’t just stay connected with the latest, greatest, hippest tools. Stay connected to the people you serve. Don’t just pine after what is new. Keep your heart connected to the Gospel - loving, believing, and trusting Jesus. Sometimes, the hip tools are just what is needed to help a new generation remember, trust today, and look ahead to God’ work. Other times, it may distract. So feel free to take creative risks, experiment, and try new things. But don’t just do it for the sake of “cool.” Do it for the sake of more people encountering Jesus. Submission to leadership, trust, constant conversation, and prayer is what is needed. Don’t just try and be as cool as Hillsong. Make decisions based on what will help your church remember, be present, and look ahead to God’s plan.
