A revolution in the Book of Hours! While the Master of Claude de France learned to paint naturalistic flowers from his teacher, Jean Bourdichon, he took an appreciation of them a daring step further. In some of his manuscripts he plucked the flowers from the borders and made them the subject of the miniatures where tradition dictated sacred imagery. Thus, in the three single leaves shown here, he depicts germander speedwell instead of the Visitation; daffodils instead of St. George; and chicory instead of St. Andrew. These leaves are now on view in Miracles in Miniature: The Art of the Master of Claude de France. Visit the exhibition: bit.ly/1nxhRd3
