A while back I posted some graphs showing my extrapolated power-curve based on some nutty tests I did on my ergo. The idea was to track progress for my weight-training program I was starting. Jonathan CeriousCoaching-Serenity Bikes Fraley, remember that? I am (still) what would be considered weak in terms of lifting numbers, so for me to get faster on the bike the clear path was to get stronger. Seems to be working. But the take-home here is I think that this is really only applicable to riders with lots of room for strength improvement. My squat is barely over 1.5x BW. Guys who are significantly stronger than that are probably chasing very diminishing returns. Which of course is the only thing to do if already riding fast. But my advice to very strong guys who are slow on the bike: forget the gym for a while and work on-bike power and speed. And for guys who are weak and pretty quick: forget speed and cadence stuff for a while and focus on getting strong.
