Abstinence (from it. Abstinenz and armor. Abstinentia: vozderzhnost, delay, detention, temperance, chastity, and fasting, starvation, selflessness, honesty) - in contrast to the traditional, substance abuse of the term, in psychoanalysis used to describe the condition of patients suffering from hysteria fear and obsessional neurosis in the process of psychoanalytic therapy. Abstinence is not seen as a pathogenic factor, but rather as a factor that supports the optimal level of frustration is needed to achieve a therapeutic effect.
