After swearing I wouldnt pick the first puppy we saw, I picked the first puppy we saw and got Scooter when he was just six weeks old for Nicholas Raitts 13th birthday present. He immediately became boys best friend. He flunked obedience school twice, was incarcerated three times, bounced like Tigger when he saw a baby, gave us the opportunity to meet hundreds of our neighbors due to his escape shenanigans, waited to poop until he had a witness to raise the humiliation factor, laid in the local creek at any temperature or time of year, would bark outside our bedroom window until we let him back in the house, ate garbage often, snored and had gas so badly that it could warrant a patent for chemical warfare. He would do a summersault by chasing his tail through his front legs. He chased butterflies and laser beams with equal enthusiasm. We were robbed of every digital item in our home in the middle of the night as we slept because, Im assuming, the burglars petted him. He would sit on your feet until you paid attention to him. It took him five years and a procedure before he finally calmed down enough to take a walk on a leash in public. He was at Nicks side every waking moment and visibly mourned when Nick died. He loved to go to doggie daycare... LOVED it! He did not love to get his temperature taken, but loved the vet. He loved to wrestle with Nick and Kelsey Raitt. He loved Carly Raitt even though she was holding a grudge for when he ate her cd collection (and pillows and socks and...). He loved to go on runs with Lee Brower, but on his terms - which meant he waited for Lee until it was time to head towards home. He was my comforter on those sad days when words cant be spoken and would put his head on my lap for hours. He was our companion, our friend, our goofball. Today, we said goodbye to our Scooter Pie and wished him well as he chases butterflies again with Nick. As Carly said yesterday, Remember, Mom, all dogs go to heaven.
