Ah yes Victoria, the city where you can do all those things in the video, if you have the money to do so. The problem with living and working within the city of Victoria is that for many of us, who have, or presently do, work for this tourist driven gentrifying city economy at below living wage, we are not able to enjoy many of things Victoria offers here in this promotional video due to economic barriers. I know what you are thinking, get an education, get a better job... ahhh, the refreshing sounds of privilege and ignorance to the mechanics of white settler hetero-normative neo-liberal western democratic-republic societies and the cycles of poverty and exploitation that are necessary for others to have the advantages of $115 whale watching tours, fine dining, and a $31.45 walk through the magnificent(so I have been told) gardens. You see, since this town is centred around tourism, and businesses love to just rake in all that cash from tourists, locals also have to pay the high tourist prices as well. I like living in Victoria. However, I am seeing more and more gentrification, apartments becoming condos, houses being torn down and turned into luxury homes, and people with money do not want to be living near me and mine, so we get pushed out of our city. Not to mention all the subtle ways Victoria pushes away the homeless, busker licenses (up to $190.00 for a year), and the parking in Victoria that prevents parking sharing (because there are no meters, if you buy an hour and leave 15 minutes later, the next person does not know that the stall has 45 minutes remaining and buys a new ticket, a brilliant scheme to really generate a lot of cash). There is more but I have to finish writing an essay for school so that I can get a better job, not so I can take whale watching tours, but so I can help others to live viable long healthly lives, like Peter Singer postulated, the ills of the social world would be solved if everyone gave excess past their utility instead of hoarding.
