As a kid, I always wanted to be an astronomer Then came a time - TopicsExpress

As a kid, I always wanted to be an astronomer Then came a time when I came across various other documentaries on Nat Geo and Discovery Networks on space and time. A few more clippings later, I had almost made up my mind to be an Astrophysicist. Days turned to years and so did my wannable profession change. At any point of time, I would want to be any ist with a prefix astro along. Anyways, this continued for quite a lot of time till the fateful day of my KVPY Interview arrived. The first question he asked was my field of interest. With a smile that I had been wearing since the beginning of the interview, I spoke of all the terminologies The Television had fed me with, including black holes, Galaxies, Quasars, Inter Stellar& Galactic space and what not! He asked, what he called basics of each of the topics I had mentioned. I just stood there blank for the basics seemed to come from an alien civilisation light years away from our Stellar System. He deciphered my silence well and told me that the universe was my mere fascination, not an interest. Had I been really interested, I would have read more about it from scientific journals and articles on the Internet rather than relying on the Baby Stuff they feed you in one of their shows on Nat Geo. So now, to proceed with the interview, I would like to know your ACTUAL field of interest. With the same puzzled look on my face, I answered.. Umm... Kinematics? He smiled, and the interview went in for 15 more minutes. The truth is, I dud not qualify that round for the final fellowship, but that just proved to be the turning point of my life. When I got home, I tried to explore those basics and it did not take me long to figure out that solving those complex differential equations would be the last thing I would like to do. Today, I know my interest and ironically it is far from being an astronomer or anything similar. Most of us fail to draw a line between our interests and fascinations. Initially we are all fascinated by different things judging them from their skin. When your fascinations drives you beyond the superficial make up and leads you deep inside the not so interesting side of it, is when you are actually interested in it. This is the most difficult and crucial step. Once you know your interest, passion or your dream, do all that it takes to pursue it with 100% commitment. In the end, the pleasure that you derives from your achievements in the field will be worth all the sacrifice in your past. Stay Focussed. Stay Progressive. #The_Progressive_NITian #techNITi_2k14
