BLOOMBERG FINES GIFT SHOP $60,000 FOR SELLING TINY, GUN SHAPED LIGHTERS Bloomberg’s obsession with guns hits a new extreme. A New York gift shop owner was unaware of a law that forbids the selling of all toy guns unless they are bright green, blue, red or neon color. Fred Shayes, 49, who owns US Camera & Computer Inc. near the famous Penn Station was hit with a $60,000 fine for selling tiny novelty lighters. Upon learning that it’s illegal to sell toy guns Shayes immediately removed the items and even showed documentation that he was in compliance, but it was too late. “We don’t have the money. I would have to take a loan out from the bank to pay that.” said Shayes The item that caused this controversy is a bronze & silver colored 3-inch butane lighter shaped like a gun with a black handle and a red tip that was selling for $10. “The day the inspector came, he said, ‘This is illegal’ ” Shayes said. “I took it off the shelf right away. I sent it back, and I showed them the invoice that proved I returned it.” Over the past 7 years, New York city officials have seized more than 7,200 illegal toy guns & levied $2.4 million in fines. Shayes said the fine could bankrupt his business. He was fined $5,000 for each of the 12 gun lighters. veryconservativenews/2013/06/bloomberg-fines-gift-shop-60000-for-selling-tiny-gun-shaped-lighters/
