Canadian Parliament under lockdown after gunman shoots Canadian Forces soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial before opening fire in the Parliament halls -Soldiers condition is unknown after he was shot at the War Memorial in Ottawa shortly before 10am Wednesday -The gunman then headed towards Parliament Hill, where dozens of gunshots were fired, according to witness accounts -Journalists inside the building reported seeing a body on the ground and described the gunman as overweight and wearing a dark jacket --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A gunman has fired dozens of times inside the halls of the Canadian Parliament after he reportedly shot a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial. The Parliaments Centre Block was placed under lockdown this morning after witnesses reported seeing a gunman climbing out of his car, grabbing a rifle, shooting the soldier in the abdomen and then running towards Parliament Hill. Ottawa police received a call at 9.52am that shots had been heard in Parliament, while journalists cowering inside said they heard dozens of rounds and could smell gunpowder in the hallways. Just after 11am, CNN reported that one or more shooters were on top of the Parliament roof. A spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Harper was safe and had left Parliament Hill. Witnesses also told the Citizen that the man wore an Arabic scarf and was carrying a long rifle, while others said he looked South American. Reports indicated that the shooting was carried out by a lone gunman. Press added that the suspects car - a Toyota Corolla - was parked in front of the building with its engine still running.
