Black Love #10 The Bronx aka The Boogie Down! I love The Bronx. I love New York City, it is the greatest city in the world. And I have truly been to every borough, and enjoyed myself. But there is something about the Bronx, that I just can’t leave alone. Maybe it is the fact that I was born there, I grew up there and I was shaped by that concrete jungle called Fort Apache. I do not want you to get the wrong idea. Although the Bronx, more specifically, the South Bronx is an urban ghetto, and even though I grew up in the projects, they did not grow up in me. My parents refused to allow us (my brother, sister and me) to merely be products of our environment. However, there are still many things about the Bronx that excite me and are forever etched in my being. Yankee Stadium, the home of the greatest sports team ever, is in the Bronx. The Bronx Zoo is one of the most famous zoos on the east coast. We have plenty of parks and a beautiful Botanical Garden (pretty nice for a concrete jungle!). City Island and Orchard Beach have created memories for plenty of people. The shopping is insane and you can find deals at Third Avenue, Fordham Road, Southern Boulevard, Bay Plaza, 161st street, Bronx Terminal Market and in Soundview. But that isn’t all. The Bronx is the home of Hip Hop, Break Dancing and home to many famous athletes, actors, rappers, singers and DJs. The ethnic make up of the Bronx is extremely diverse, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Italians, Greeks, West Indians, Asians, Americans, Cubans and so many others. You cannot imagine the pride that I have if you are not a native New Yorker because most visitors to NYC do not visit the Bronx. It isn’t usually a point of interest on their itinerary. However, it is a great place. You can find food from every ethnicity in the Bronx. All types of Spanish food, fried fish and seafood are abundant, hot dog vendors, soul food, west Indian restaurants, Chinese restaurants and the pizza…oh my goodness, THE PIZZA!!!!!! I didn’t even mention the summer treat that is made in the Bronx…Coco Helado (the greatest cold treat you could have on a summer day!) I am not saying the other boroughs don’t deserve love. I love the whole city. Really, I do, but the Bronx just holds a special place in my heart. It is where I learned to survive as a minority youngster. I grew up around blacks and Hispanics. We all got along together in the struggle. That was my world until I ventured out into other areas of New York. There were plenty of older men and women who taught me to be proud of who I was. Although they were living in the same poor area I lived in, they motivated me to do better and to make sure I made a difference one day. I grew up living near the Jackson Avenue train station (2 & 5 trains). My building is seen on every rap movie ever filmed in the Bronx. There are beautiful people everywhere in my favorite borough. You want to know who some of our famous people are? The whole Wayans Family, Jennifer Lopez, Luther Vandross, Malik Yoba, Stacey Dash, Kerry Washington, Tracy Morgan, Robert DeNiro, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and many others! It bothers me when I tell people that I am from the Bronx and they say: Isnt that the same as Brooklyn? I love the Bronx and I made a t-shirt to prove it! Look out for my new t-shirt that will be on sale soon!(Shameful plug!) Meanwhile spread the love!
