Chennai Express Soundtrack Review Shah Rukh Khan. Rohit Shetty. Vishal-Shekhar. When such stalwarts collaborate in a film, its soundtrack would be anything but mundane or unexciting. And if the film in question is a colourful and spicy venture like ‘Chennai Express’, expectations are bound to climb further! So does the music of ‘Chennai Express’ fit the bill? Is it as glitzy and zesty as the people involved in the film? Let’s get started with our review and see if Vishal-Shekhar have managed to deliver yet another chartbuster score after ‘Student of the Year’. 1 2 3 4 Get On The Dance Floor: Item songs have been common these days courtesy the impact they have on the masses. Be it Munni or Shiela, item songs have acquired an unparalleled fan base and are also regarded as a key ingredient of a commercially successful film. So, there is nothing surprising in the fact that there is an item number in ‘Chennai Express’ as well. A typical South-Indian number sans the raunchy lyrics, ‘1 2 3 4 Get on the Dance Floor’ has SRK sharing a leg with southern siren Priyamani. The question here is that will the song be as impactful as Munni or Sheila??? Ah, well people’s opinion will be divided here. Sung by Vishal Dadlani and Hamsika Iyer, the song, though peppy, has words which may not be hummed easily. That said; it may get some acceptance down South. The biggest plus point of the song is that it doesn’t have any vulgarity in its lyrics or dance steps and can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere. Tuned with fast beats and a desi flavour, be prepared to let this song grow on you! Rating- 3/5 Titli: Arguably the best track in the album, Titli, sung by Chinmayi Sripaada and Gopi Sunder, is an absolute gem, just like its title. Its video which was released on Youtube a few days back has garnered instant appreciation among the cyber audience. Soothing, simple and extremely melodious, the song has a certain amount of innocence attached to it courtesy the unique voices (Chinmayi and Gopi Sunder) while Amitabh’s lyrics heighten the impact of the tune. Play this on loop and see the effect! Rating- 4/5 Tera Rastaa Main Chodun Na (Meherbaani): Famous for composing youthful romantic tracks, Vishal-Shekhar have come up with yet another feather in their hat in the form of ‘Tera Rastaa’. Amitabh Bhattacharya, who is also the lyricist of the film, joins Anusha Mani behind the mike for this outing. A soulful duet, ‘Mehebaani’ could have worked a little more had the beats been a little slower and complimented the smooth tune and the lovely lyrics. The composition though, would gain instant prominence amongst the youth and could go on to become a chartbuster. Rating- 3.5/5 Chennai Express (Title Track): When SPB (legendary singer S.P Balasubrahmanyam) advices you to buy the ticket for Chennai Express before it departs, can you say no? Making a comeback to Bollywood after a hiatus of 15 long years, fans of this great singer are in for a treat with this ultra-attractive number. You may feel at the first hearing that his voice doesn’t quite suit the song but the catchy tune make the number stand out. Overall, a decent number with jazzy beats that could scorch the screen in the film’s opening/closing credits. Rating- 3/5 Kashmir mein, Tu Kanyakumari: Fresh from the exploits in Aashiqui 2, Arijit Singh along with Neeti Mohan and Sunidhi Chauhan render their voice to this soothing track that signifies the oppositeness of the lead characters and can also be referred to as a beautiful tribute to our nation’s diverse culture. A peppy track, ‘Kasmir Main’ seems in sync with the theme of the film, which is to spread love and happiness. Not a probable chartbuster but the song would surely bring a smile to your face. Rating- 3/5 Ready Steady Po: Vishal-Shekhar are no strangers to the rock and rap genre. They have also worked with International singers like Akon and composed brilliant dance numbers in Ra.One and SOTY among many others. But one feels that incorporating a similar number in a film like ‘Chennai Express’ could’ve been avoided. Having said that, ‘Ready Steady Po’ crooned by Vishal Dadlani, Brodha V, Smokey, Enkore and Natalie Di Luccio, is a live wire that would surely grow on you after a couple of hearings. Groovy and energetic, the song is one of my personal favourites from the album. I just hope that the number goes well with the mood of the film. Rating- 3.5/5 On the whole, the tracklist of ‘Chennai Express’ is suitably loaded, keeping in mind the film’s target audience. Titli, Meherbaani and Ready Steady Po are the pick of the album and although it may not be a ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ or an ‘Aashiqui 2’, I feel the album would grow on the cine-goers once the film hits the screens.
