Chronology of events, according to journalist Walter Barasa KENYA: Between December 1 and 5, 2012, Walter Barasa is contacted by an ICC investigator who introduces himself as Paul Irani. Irani seeks a meeting and asks Barasa to hire a taxi to Nairobi the next day as the matter is urgent. Irani pays Sh30,000 to the taxi owner. They meet at the Westgate Mall in Westlands in the company of another investigator called Ule. Irani was seeking Barasa’s help to locate a woman from Kiambaa church arson who had participated in a lawsuit in Nakuru. The investigator asks him to get the woman for her to confirm what she had told him on phone because he could not travel to Eldoret, which he was told was hostile. Irani purchased a cellphone with an Airtel phone line and gives it to Barasa to be taken to the woman. A day later, Barasa meets the woman who confirms that she had talked with Irani. Irani requests Barasa to get the woman a temporary passport to enable her travel to Uganda for interrogation and statement recording. After a few days of interrogation and statement taking, she returns and gives a conflicting account of her statement as directed by the investigator. Barasa warns her that she faces the risk of prosecution if it turns out that she was lying. The investigators send the woman Sh45,500 and a sum of Sh6,000 for facilitation, making a total of Sh51,500, which she withdraws and gives to Barasa to process passports for her and her family. After a week, the woman and her family cross over to Uganda and communication is cut off for some time until Barasa received a call from the woman using a Ugandan number. The woman complains that her children are not going to school and that life has become very difficult contrary to what she was promised and wants to return to her country, Kenya. Barasa later meets Irani at Topelli Restaurant near Nairobi Hospital and informs him about the complaints and warns him that the woman has threatened to abandon the cause. Irani promises to address the issue. On September 15, he holds a meeting with Irani who warns him of arrest. Arrest warrant issued Wednesday.
