Offering an elevated approach to Milwaukees beer and brat tradition, the Vanguard will specialize in house-made sausages, while the casual space pays homage to Milwaukees corner bar environment. Owners and Milwaukee residents, Jim McCann and Chris Schulist, have been working on the Vanguard idea for quite some time. We wanted to open a place with unique gourmet options in a friendly and fun bar atmosphere. We decided that sausages and brats were perfect for the concept because it is such a versatile food, said McCann. The Vanguards chef-created menu will focus on innovative sausages and brats ranging from familiar favorites, to vegetarian, to the adventurous. The menu is paired with an extensive drink program (Punches, Draft Cocktails, Classic Cocktails, Micro and Craft Brews, Imports, Standards, as well as an extensive Bourbon and Whiskey list) that will appeal to everyone from the no-nonsense beer drinker to the discerning connoisseur. McCann and Schulist hired Shay Linkus (formerly of Odd Duck) to head their kitchen. We are really excited about our menu. Shay has been really creative with the concept and has even added a full Poutine menu and lots of other interesting options, said Schulist. The Vanguard will be open from 11am- 2am for lunch, take-out, dinner, and late-night. -MORE- The Vanguard fills a niche in the ever growing Milwaukee bar and restaurant scene,” said Schulist. “There are not a lot of places for quick take-out and late night food options, so we hope to be a welcomed addition to the Bay View community. With interesting food, eclectic music, and conversation over great drinks, we hope to have something for everyone.” “Seeing our dream become a reality was a team effort,” said McCann. “We want to thank everyone who has supported us, and special thanks to Alderman Tony Zielinski for all of his help and efforts to make the Vanguard a reality.” The Vanguard plans to open this summer, just in time for patio season. ### MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE VANGUARD Chris Schulist (Owner/Manager/Bartender) Chris Schulist has lived in Milwaukee his entire life and has been a part of the local Milwaukee music scene as a member of many local bands, and as a fixture of Milwaukees premiere music venue, the Cactus Club, for over thirteen years (managing the bar, and winning Milwaukees Best Bartender in the Shepherd Express for two consecutive years). I have always dreamed of owning my own bar in Milwaukee. I love it here. I grew up on the North Side, lived on the East Side and Riverwest throughout college, and moved to Bay View a few years after starting work at the Cactus Club in the early 2000s. I have lived in Bay View for over ten years now, and I recently bought a home here. I am very excited to open a place in one of my favorite neighborhoods in all of Milwaukee. Jim McCann (Owner/Manager/Bartender) Jim McCann is a partner at the Michelin Star-awarded Longman & Eagle gastropub restaurant, where he performed the duties of bar manager, beverage director, and head bartender for over two and a half years from its inception. McCann also previously managed and tended bar at Delilah’s for over nine years. Delilahs was recognized in Malt Advocate as one of the top five whiskey bars in the world. Chris and I have been close friends for over fifteen years, and we have always talked about running a bar together. Now as a Bay View resident, I am so excited that we get to fulfill our dream in our very own neighborhood. Shay Linkus (Chef/Kitchen Manager) Trained at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in San Francisco, with over twenty one years experience in the restaurant industry, Linkus has helped to open four Milwaukee restaurants, and most recently served as chef de cuisine at Bay View’s Odd Duck. “I am excited to join Chris and Jim to deliver quality and originality at the Vanguard. I will work to create an exciting atmosphere with memorable cuisine,” said Linkus.
