Decorah Climate Advocates: Here are three key upcoming opportunities in Decorah or around our state to advocate for climate action: 1. America’s Climate Century “Read-A-Thon” in Decorah Saturday, June 22 at 10 a.m. 2. Congressional Climate Phone-A-Thon Monday, June 24 to Wednesday, June 26 3. Citizens Climate Lobby Group Launch in Des Moines, Saturday, July 20, 1-4 p.m. America’s Climate Century “Read-A-Thon,” Saturday, June 22, starting at 10 a.m. – I am planning to attend the “read-a-thon” for my new book, America’s Climate Century, Saturday, June 22, starting at 10 a.m., at the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, 119 Winnebago Street, in downtown Decorah. I will participate in the reading and would be happy to sign books. I will also bring extras for sale to $10 (tax included). This is part of a statewide book tour that has included stops in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Newton, Ames, Onawa, Sioux City, Cedar Falls, Fort Madison, Fairfield, Madrid, Altoona, Independence, Dubuque, and Davenport. Iowa City is also having a “read-a-thon” Saturday – I won’t be able to join them, but I hope it is a success. In Cedar Rapids, we are planning a four-week book series on July 10, 17, 24, and 31. The book is short (120 pages), affordable ($10.95), and accessible. It is a patriotic call for Americans to lead the world in the fight against climate change to achieve a new future of sustainability. It provides a handy eight-page appendix that responds to the “Doubting Thomas” arguments we all hear. As Jennifer Hemmingsen wrote in a column in the Cedar Rapids Gazette on April 28, the book is a “120-page overview” that gets you “from zero to well-informed in a manner of hours.” With its red-white-and-blue cover, the book makes a great gift for Independence Day. I will also make sure it is available at the Decorah Public Library and at the Luther College library. If you like the book, please like it on Facebook, and let your friends, family, and colleagues across the country know about it. I am hoping it will become a reference, an organizing tool, and hopefully an inspiration for the climate action we so urgently need. Congressional Climate Phone-A-Thon, June 24 to June 26 The next big step in our statewide climate advocacy is the Congressional Climate Phone-A-Thon, Monday, June 24 through Wednesday, June 26. This is timed in conjunction with the national conference and lobby days of Citizens Climate Lobby, which is doing district-by-district organizing to build the political will to support climate action. CCL is focused for now on passing “carbon fee and divided” legislation that would put a fee on carbon pollution and refund all revenue to American citizens on a per capita basis. CCL is working very hard to make this a bipartisan proposal. The basic message for the call: “I am a citizen in Iowa, and I would like Congressman _______ to support carbon fee and dividend legislation and other action to fight climate change in 2013. With all the recent disasters – wildfires, floods, tornadoes, droughts, and Hurricane Sandy – climate change is an urgent issue. Please share this message with the Congressman. My name is ____________ and my address is ___________________. Thank you.” Here are the numbers to call: > Congressman Bruce Braley, 202-225-2911 or 319-287-3233 > Congressman Tom Latham, 202-225-5476 or 515-282-1909 > Congressman Steve King, 202-225-4426 or 712-224-4692 > Congressman Dave Loebsack, 202-225-6576 or 319-351-0789 Even though Congressman Braley represents Decorah, we are encouraging calls to all four of Iowa’s Congressional representatives. Also, please encourage your friends around the country to call their Congressional representatives, too, between June 24 and June 26. When you have made your call(s), please report them to me at SenatorRobHogg@gmail. Thank you. It’s Not Too Late To Contact President Obama For Father’s Day – Climate Parents organized messages to President Obama in conjunction with Father’s Day to ask him to do more to fight climate change for his children and all of our children. It is not too late to share that message with President Obama. To do so, visit this web address: act.engagementlab.org/sign/president_dad/?akid=436.169229.hy2Iv7&rd=1&t=4 I sent President Obama this Father’s Day message, and I hope you will, too. Citizens Climate Lobby Launch, Des Moines, July 20 – We are going to be launching a new chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby on Saturday, July 20, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at First Unitarian Church, 1800 Bell Avenue, in Des Moines. This event will feature Lynate Pettengill of Citizens Climate Lobby in Kansas, a veteran of climate advocacy aimed at building bipartisan support for the climate action we so urgently need. It would be great to have a carpool from Decorah attend this event and work with others who live in the First Congressional District on building a CCL chapter in our district. For more details about Citizens Climate Lobby, please visit citizensclimatelobby.org. Great March for Climate Action, March 1 to November 1, 2014 – The Great March for Climate Action will be leaving Santa Monica, California, on March 1, 2014, and arriving in Washington, DC, on November 1, 2014. Organizers recently released the route including stops in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, DC. For more details, and to get involved, visit climatemarch.org. I hope this information is helpful, and please keep up your advocacy for the climate action we so urgently need for our future.
