Did u know? Insulin is more effective in space! Insulin is a hormone, produced by beta cells of the pancreas, and it’s central to regulating carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body. Insulin causes cells in the liver, skeletal muscles, and fat tissue to absorb sugar from the blood. Insulin stops the use of fat as an energy source by inhibiting the release of glucagon. With the exception of the metabolic disorder diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, insulin is provided within the body in a constant proportion to remove excess glucose from the blood, which otherwise would be toxic. When control of insulin level fails, diabetes mellitus can result. This is why Doctors try to work on developing the perfect kind of insulin that could help this type of patients throughout their treatment. Even experiments at space have been done! In 1998 NASA grew insulin in space. Researchers found that it was so effective it could reduce insulin intake from 1-3 times per day to once every 3 days
