Do you agree or disagree with this person? I do not think that her choice to remove the thes from these sentences is correct. (I had just sent out a company e-mail to explain to people that leaving the out in many contexts is incorrect... I think I would call her removal here incorrect also but I promised to ask the hive mind.) - Christa SHE SAID (And I dont agree, but do you) What if the sentence is: “The results of the lab testing show blah, blah, blah…” Can it be shortened to: “Results of lab testing show blah, blah, blah…” I am generally of the opinion that our reports are way OVERPOPULATED with “the” at the beginnings of sentences. When you have a two paragraph passage with 8 sentences total and 6 of the sentences start with “the”, I believe it makes for an unnecessarily dry and boring read. There are so many ways to word a sentence so that it doesn’t begin with “the” that it makes me crazy when I see the situation I just described. When editing, I read every sentence that begins with “the” and read it again dropping “the” to see if it’s still correct. If the “the” isn’t necessary, I drop it. I’m not trying to turn our reports into flowery works of prose, I just want our readers see that we know how to write as well as we engineer. - person
